Happy Fall season everyone! The intense summer heat is behind us and the gardens are ready to transition to cooler weather, so where do we start?
Selecting the correct variety of vegetables and herbs is a great place to start to ensure a successful harvest. In Florida you need a variety that is heat tolerant and pest resistant. Even though we are going into a cooler season, there can still be heat waves that come through. If you’re growing a northern variety, they will struggle to produce vegetables in our unpredictable weather. No matter how much love or fertilizer you give to the plant, it simply won’t be able to thrive. A great resource on what to grow in each season is our seasonal menu : www.sungoldgardens.com/seasonal-vegetables.
Once you have your plants, it’s time to plan out the map for your garden. Know the orientation of your garden so you can best place your veggies. You want to know how the sun will be traveling across the garden, and be aware of possible shadows cast by the surroundings of the garden and the vegetables in the garden. In the Fall the sun lives lower in the southern sky, also known as southern exposure. Because of this, you should plan to have your tallest veggies on the north side of the garden.
